Then You'll reach the Piazza della Signoria (Florence's most famous square) with its Fountain of Neptune built by the architect Ammannati in 1575 and criticized by many, including Michelangelo; Florentines used to mock it as the Big Whitey.
You'll reach the Old Bridge that is the only remaining original of Florence's many lovely medieval bridges spanning the Arno , the Germans blew the rest of them up during their retreat from Italy near the end of the World II War. This symbol of the city of Florence offers beautiful views and thrives with shops selling leather goods, jewellery, and other commodities. At the end You'll go to visit inside the Basilica of Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) that was begun in 1294 by Arnolfo di Cambio, the first architect of the Duomo, and is a magnificent example of Italian gothic.
Florence, with its nearly 400,000 inhabitants, received its name from the Romans. The city was a bishop since the 4th Century until becoming a City Republic in 1183. During the medieval wars,
The papal Florence reached the supremacy in Tuscany. Before the plague in 1348, approximately 120.000 people lived in Florence, so the city was among the most populous in the world.
In the 15th and 16th century, the Medici family was one of the most influential factors in the fight for power, wealth and prestige.
Florence is attractive in every season. There are infinite possibilities to spend interesting and unforgettable hours.
Florence is best explored on foot, because most sights are not far apart. The centre focuses mainly on two centres - The Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza della Signoria with the old City Hall. The gigantic dome of Santa Maria del Fiore is the symbol of Florence and one of the largest churches of the Christian world.
