Heading South along the coastal highway with distant views of Vesuvius and of the Bay of Naples drive to ancient Pompei, the most fascinating archaeological site in the world. Once a thriving city this exciting ancient times playground was devastated by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. when 30 feet of volcanic ashes and pomice stones buried it. Ironically one of the ancient world major disasters preserved time in Pompei where present time visitors experience life as it was lived in 79 A.D.. Enjoy a breathtaking look through the centuries as you step back into antiquity. See the Forum, heart of the ancient city, surrounded by imposing temples and gorgeous residences. Begin to grasp the lifestyle of the inhabitants. See theatres, villas, shops, commercial districts, public baths or "thermae" where people relaxed and socialized and see even plaster casts of some city residents in their last moments. Admire countless wall paintings decorating wealthy patrician mansions and be amused by some curious naughty frescos. See the streets with pavements on both sides and the stepping stones that ensured pedestrians safe crossing at intersections. Time may be allocated to visit a cameo carvers workshop where local artisans can be seen at work in their centuries old tradition.
