No archaeological site in Italy has the drama of Pompeii. Suddenly, in 79 A.D. its life was frozen when the ash from Mt. Vesuvius buried this bustling town. But the same disaster created a miracle for modern-day visitors as the volcanic ash has preserved intact so far Pompeii’s buildings, streets, mosaics, and frescoes.

The second stop will be Sorrento, perched on cliffs high above the Mediterranean sea. Famous vacation resort, the small town of Sorrento is located in one of the most amazing spot of the Campania region coast. That is for this reason, the great location and the mild climate, that Sorrento was already famous in the past like vacation resort to the ancient Romans that built right here many villas. According to a legend, the name of the town derives from the myth of the sirens, and certainly the beauty of Sorrento is one of the reasons on which that legend is based. It is certainly true that the place where the city is located, which was probably founded by Greek settlers, was already known in prehistoric times. Dominated by Syracuse and by Samnites, Sorrento was occupied by the Romans in the third century BC and it became Municipium two centuries later. At the time of the Roman Empire, as already mentioned above, Sorrento was a holiday resort favoured by Roman aristocracy. The year 1544 was an important year for Sorrento as in that historic moment it was the birthplace of the famous poet Torquato Tasso. Today the main square bears his name and that is where one can see two monuments, one dedicated just to the poet and the other to St. Antonino, patron saint of the city. There, Your guide can show You the Tasso Square and the small streets in the historic town where You will have free time on Your own (1 hour).

After that, by car or minivan You will drive along the Amalfi Coast, the southern part of the Sorrento Peninsula. Short-Stop (10 minutes) to admire that beautiful village from a panoramic terrace. Then, You continue for Amalfi, now a thriving holiday resort, but once it was a powerful and prosperous Maritime Republic, and homeland of Flavio Gioia, the inventor of the compass. The maritime power of Amalfi is attested by the remains of the shipyard of the Republic where they built the ships and from the monument dedicated to Flavio Gioia. At the center of Amalfi, preceded by a large staircase, stands the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Andrew. To the left of the Cathedral, one can enter the Cloister of Paradise, built in 1266-68 as a cemetery of prominent residents of Amalfi and then abandoned in the XVII century. Thanks to recent renovations, the cloister has been restored to its former glory. In the cloister one can also admire sarcophagi and sculptures from Roman and medieval times. There, you can have free time on Your own (1 hour). So, You will drive back to Your cruise/hotel.
