The Vatican City is not only made up of the Basilica with its neighbouring buildings like many people think, but there are quite large grounds behind the main structures. The gardens can be visited only in the context of a guided tour. Worth to see are the Casino Pio IV, a building by Piero Ligorio (the architect of the Villa d'Este) and the Santo Stefano degli Abissini church. Other buildings in the gardens are the government building of the Vatican, Johannes tower, a transmitter of Radio Vatican and the Vatican heliport. Moreover, there are several beautiful fountains.
The Sistine Chapel is the masterpiece of Michelangelo and the crowning glory of the Vatican museums.
Outwardly, the Sistine Chapel still looks medieval: The chapel was built from 1475 to 1481 under Pope Sixtus IV as a papal chapel, so it has its name, therefore its name. The building is rectangular, about 40 meters long, 13 meters wide and 26 meters high. That should correspond to the dimensions of the Temple of Solomon. The side walls and the back wall are divided into three levels. The lower level consists of painted curtains with the crest Sixtus' IV. The works are from artists from Umbria and Tuscany and were created from 1481 to 1483. Over them, between the windows, are shown 24 popes, works by the same artists who created the frescoes.
In the middle of the vault, we see nine scenes from Genesis, alternately in large and small paintings: God separates light and darkness, God creates the stars and the plants, God separates land and water, Creation of Adam, Creation of Eve, Fall and Expulsion from Paradise, The victims of Noah, Deluge and Noah's drunkenness. To these central pictures Michelangelo painted prophets from the Old Testament and ancient Sibyllen. In the excerpts of the windows (lunettes) are displayed the ancestors of Jesus. Since 1870 the Sistine Chapel is the place where the papal election takes place.
